So which superstar actor is set to be the new face of Joker?

As a successful American actor who never played the sex-symbol card, carefully side-stepping the red carpet, Joaquin Phoenix has given himself the liberty to always go one step beyond. With an ever-growing portfolio of eclectic characters, he regularly takes on the most unexpected roles that testify to an unquestionably brilliant acting capacity. Currently promoting the latest Gus Van Sant film, Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far On Foot, he also stars in Jacques Audiard’s foray into the western genre, The Sisters Brothers (expected in French cinemas on September 19th). But there’s no idling about for this actor, and that’s the least we can say, as next up is his embodiment of Joker in the new film by Todd Philips (Borat, War Dogs). Focusing on the back story of Batman’s worst enemy, Joker follows the recently busy line of cinematic adaptations of DC comic books, hot on the heels of Justice League and Wonder Woman. A film that’s as dark as it is experimental, it’s based on the villainous character well known on the big screen thanks to a slew of successful performances by the likes of Heath Ledger, Jack Nicholson and Jared Leto.

“About three or four years ago, I phoned my agent to ask him why [the producers] didn’t take a [comic book character] to make a low budget film as a character study, and why not a super-villain?” Joaquin Phoenix recently confided. “I didn’t think I would be able to play the Joker because he’d already been done, so I tried to find other characters and [my agent]wanted to organise a meeting with the people at Warner Bros; I said I can’t go to that kind of meeting… So, I just forgot [that project] until I heard about this idea [a film about the Joker]that really got me excited, which is the kind of feeling I look for with a film about a comic book character.”

Joker is set for released in cinemas on October 9th 2019.
