Who is Bess NYC, the hot new artist discovered by Dior on Instagram?

 

Inspired by the irreverence of artist Bess NYC, a social network phenomenon, the house of Dior invited him to do the scenography for its new line of sunglasses DiorSplit, with a series of videos and surprising collages.

 

 

He’s one of those artists who use Instagram like a blank canvas. Going by the name of @bessnyc4 (or more simply “Bess NYC”) Doug Abraham has made controversy his signature and social networks his playground. The New York based artist crafts his oeuvre through the appropriation of campaigns by major houses from Céline and Loewe to Balenciaga and Givenchy. With clever collage, this fashion and luxury lover mixes up iconic campaigns with photographs from contemporary pop culture to create new images, often subversive, always fascinating.

 

His creativity certainly charmed the house of Dior, who chose him to set the stage for its summer 2016 line of glasses DiorSplit, an ultra-contemporary version of the aviator design with mirrored stripy lenses. Delving into the archives of the fashion house, Bess NYC has combined sublime black and white images of the 1950s with photos from the 2016 eyewear campaign shot by the great Patrick Demarchelier.  "Dior gave me access to their picture archive and the most incredible videos, which I juxtaposed with visuals from the new campaign in this idea of crossing the past and the future", he explains. This bold collaboration continues with a series of five short films of life backstage at the spring-summer 2016 runway show, all of which can be discovered on the couture house's website.
