Kenzo x H&M : an encounter with Carol Lim, Humberto Leon and Ann-Sofie Johansson

On the occasion of their 16th designer collection, in store on November 3rd, H&M turned to Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, Kenzo’s co-creative directors. Numéro asked a few questions to the designers as well as to Ann-Sofie Johansson, H&M art director.

Why did you approach Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, Kenzo's co-artistic directors, to design this 16th collaboration?

Ann-Sofie Johansson : We’re thrilled that Carol and Humberto have agreed to make Kenzo x H&M our next designer collaboration. We love to show the different sides of fashion through our designer collaborations, and Kenzo is totally unique. They capture a mood for fun and experimentation in fashion, giving people the chance to play with their look and to try new colors, shapes and global influences. I love that they’re so democratic, and believe that fashion should be for everyone. They’re the perfect brand for an H&M collaboration and we can’t wait for our customers to get the chance to wear the clothes for themselves.

How did you design this collection ?

Humberto Leon : Kenzo x H&M quickly became a three dimensional conversation between H&M and us of course, but also with Kenzo Takada, founder of the brand. Since we started as creative directors of Kenzo, we’ve never really played with the archives, but there are so many people who don’t know about Mr Takada’s amazing legacy. We wanted to combine his original designs and our own take on Kenzo, creating pieces that will only ever exist as part of Kenzo x H&M.

Kenzo Takada really broke many fashion rules, mixing prints and colours in full freedom

In which way are you paying tribute to Kenzo Takada in this collection?

Carol Lim : There is so much to learn from Mr Takada, and from his outstanding vision of fashion. He had one of those very instinctive creative minds, who designed extraordinary clothes that were also wearable in everyday life. He really broke many fashion rules, mixing prints and colours in full freedom. It’s such an inspirational attitude to have about fashion, and we wanted every piece of KENZO x H&M to be representative of that spirit.

We all pushed our limits. Each piece had to be unique in its own way.

Comment s’est déroulée la rencontre entre les équipes ?

Ann-Sofie Johansson : Carol and Humberto are not only two adorable personnalities but also extremely perfectionist. We worked very hard to make everything perfect. Both of them have a natural instinct to quickly take the most suitable decisions for the brand. We had a lot of pleasure working together !

Humberto Leon : Designing this collection was an amazing experience during which we all pushed our limits. Each piece had to be unique in its own way.
