Il y a quelques jours, Thom Browne devenait officiellement président du CFDA (Conseil des créateurs de mode américains), succédant à Tom Ford, appelé à la rescousse en 2019 pour redonner du panache à une Fashion Week de New York en perte d’éclat. Mission accomplie pour le flamboyant créateur texan qui confie les rênes de l’institution à son compatriote fétichiste du costume gris étriqué.

Un défilé Thom Browne automne-hiver 2023-2024 inspiré par Le Petit Prince

Véritable metteur en scène, Thom Browne conçoit chaque saison des défilés-spectacles qui ferait presque oublier que l’on assiste à un défilé de mode. Et ce défilé Thom Browne automne-hiver 2023-2024, présenté à la Fashion Week de New York, ne déroge pas à la règle. Dans une salle intégralement grise (forcément), les invités sont assis en cercle autour d’un avion écrasé dans le désert. Une référence explicite au livre Le Petit Prince de Saint-Exupéry (1943) qui se confirme dès l’apparition de l’aviateur – dans un look matelassé évoquant la combinaison "Tokyo Pop" créée par Kansai Yamamoto pour David Bowie et du petit prince, en tailleur de tweed de flanelle grise sur une robe brodée de racines de baobab en lingots d'or. Puis les autres personnages du livre, d’abord les planètes où le petit prince rencontre un monarque, un businessman, un allumeur de réverbère, un géographe, un vaniteux et un buveur avec leurs robes en organza blanc ornés de dessins surréalistes, les horloges avec leurs manteaux surdimensionnés en tweed tissé à la main, les astéroïdes dans des robes en tweed brodées sous des costumes à fines rayures déconstruits, ainsi que l'éléphant, la rose du petit prince et les trois roses, le renard, le serpent et enfin… l’ange dans une robe en tweed à lacets blancs.

Un défilé Thom Browne onirique qui aborde des thèmes universels comme la solitude, la perte, la détermination, et dont on retiendra surtout que s’ouvrir au monde et aux autres est encore le plus court chemin vers la créativité. Un appel à l’amour et au partage diffusé ce mardi 14 février 2023 et qui s’achève sur une note émouvante alors que Thom Browne offre un cadeau de Saint-Valentin à son compagnon Andrew Bolton - le conservateur en chef du Costume Institute du Metropolitan Museum of Art de New York.
